Ohio Edison was incorporated in 1930 by The Commonwealth and Southern Corporation to merge five smaller Ohio utilities, the oldest of which dated back to the mid 19th century. In 1944, Ohio Edison acquired Pennsylvania Power Company and in 1950 they merged with Ohio Public Service Company and continued its expansion under the Ohio Edison name. In 1967, they joined forces with Cleveland Electric Illuminating (CEIC), Duquesne Light Company, and Toledo Edison to form Central Area Power Coordination Group (CAPCO) to share in construction and operation of large scale regional electricity generating units.

Ohio Edison (formerly NYSE: OEC) merged with Centerior in 1997 to form FirstEnergy and is one of three FirstEnergy utilities in Ohio (others are The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison).
