1 Benefits of online learning

Online learning is a great option for busy professionals who want to advance their knowledge and competencies in educational leadership. It allows them to access diverse and relevant topics, such as curriculum design, instructional leadership, organizational change, diversity and inclusion, and educational policy. They can also learn from experienced and qualified instructors who can provide feedback, guidance, and mentoring. Moreover, they can interact with peers from different backgrounds, contexts, and perspectives who can add value to their learning experience and network. Additionally, online learning allows them to manage their own pace and schedule while balancing work and personal commitments. It also saves time and money by avoiding travel costs, accommodation fees, and other expenses associated with traditional courses.

Based upon my experience as a teacher, coach, middle school principal and superintendent of schools, online learning is significantly less effective than in person courses. Teaching and learning are highly dependent on the relationship created between the student and teacher. Real human interaction develops the most effective medium for humans to discover, discuss, practice and master new content.

I completed the NPQH through UCLs Institute of Education online owing to the pandemic. The content of the course is the same across the providers, but the manner in which it was delivered made it a good course. What made it a great course was the interactions that I had with the coaches and the groups I worked with.

Stay disciplined.Keep to deadlines, setting your own to give time for feedback and improvements prior to final submissions.Use others on the course as good resources and share your 'team' ideas to support one another.Find a space that is conducive to study. Workplaces tend to give distractions and home tends to be too comfortable. Libraries remain free to access.

Do a little something every day. Even if it is just reading one sentence, highlighting an idea, or moving your pencil across your desk. Keep moving. Little efforts are cumulative. And above all, be curious. Be there first and most because you want to learn. An oldie but goodie bit of advice, we get out of most things what we put into them.

Team building, mediation and conflict resolution proved to be among the most valuable skills that I learned along the way. This was true at various leadership roles that I held throughout my career. These skills can be learned online as well as various local agencies where these skills are often required.
