I wanted to try instant oats idli for a long time to add it to my oats recipe collection. Used to make a version of this before,by adding a oats as major part in the rava idli.

But when I saw this recipe in Sharmis blog, they looked very tempting to try. Moreover, I wanted to try wheat rava idli too and this recipe is a double treat for me as it combines both.

I love this recipe very much and this tastes very similar to the usual rava idli, more healthy undoubtedly!

Made variations a bit to suit my taste buds and convenience..

Ingredients

Instant oats idli recipe - Raks Kitchen (3)
  • Oats - I used quick cook oats. But I think any type of oats should work in this recipe
  • Wheat rava - Adds flavor and taste to the recipe. Also helps with the texture.
  • Eno - I use this fruit salt for fluffy results. This is basically similar to cooking soda chemically. You can replace ¼ teaspoon of cooking soda if you do not have eno. Use only blue pack or green pack of eno not the other flavors.
  • Curd - Adds softness and reacts with soda to give the effect same as you do fermentation.
  • Lemon juice - Important for reacting with soda and give soft and sponcy idli.

Refer my recipe card for full list and quantities.

Step by step

1. Dry roast Oats firstly for 3 minutes in medium flame until nice aroma comes.

After that, powder it coarsely after it cools down.

2. Then, heat a pan with oil and temper the items in the table ‘To temper’.

That is, to hot oil, add mustard and let it splutter. After that add other items and roast in medium flame until golden.

Followed by the vegetables you decided to add and ginger, green chillies, coriander leaves.

Then, give it a quick fry and add the wheat rava.Roast furthermore for a minute in medium flame.

3. Then, transfer to mixing bowl and add oats, salt, curd, lemon juice, water as required.

Now, make a thick yet pouring consistency batter, similar to our idli batter.(neither too runny nor too thick).

Then, add Eno fruit salt just before making idli and mix well. This will give you a frothy/airy batter which gives a soft spongy idly.

Steaming Oats idli

1. Pour the batter in a greased idly plate. Boil enough water in a steamer firstly.

2. Secondly, place the idli stand inside it. The water boiling should not touch the lower track of idli otherwise, while boiling it will affect the texture of idli.

3. Close with lid and steam cook for 10-12 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean.

4. Take out carefully and cool down for a minute.

5. Finally To un mould the idli, dip a spoon in water and run it around steamed idli to scoop it out. Repeat for all idli.
