A sneak preview for soldiers Spielberg sponsors special screening for real-life military stars FORT DRUM, N.Y. They've hunted down terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan, opposed rebels in Bosnia and battled warlords in Somalia. Now, 10th Mountain Division troops are facing off against Martian invaders with no less than the fate of the Earth in the balance. The soldiers were called on by Steven Spielberg, who picked Fort Drum troops to star in his remake of the H.G. Wells classic "War of the Worlds." The movie, starring Tom Cruise, opens nationwide today, but the actor-soldiers were treated to a sneak preview Monday night at the post movie theater.
"It feels awesome to help save the world," said Sgt. Christopher Lumpiesz, of Tampa, who gets to help shoot down a Martian ship in the movie. Lumpiesz, who saw real combat in Afghanistan, was one of 42 10th Mountain Division soldiers who play roles in two scenes in the movie. Other military units from the Army and Marines appear in the movie as well. Thirty-two of those watched the movie Monday night, along with a capacity crowd of special guests.
The other 10 soldiers were on leave or have been reassigned since the scenes were shot in the first week of December in upstate New York and Connecticut. "Spielberg wanted real soldiers to make the scenes more authentic. He was quite impressed. She plays Rachel, Ray's daughter, a girl teetering on the edge of adolescence and swinging back and forth, from cool, knowing maturity to childishness. She maintains this even while she executes many other wild swings fear to panic to rational thinking to shock and back as the action revs up.
Fanning's performance is all the more remarkable considering that Spielberg gives her and Cruise (along with Justin Chatwin, also fine as Ray's sullen teenage son) all of 10 minutes to establish their characters before that action begins. Though Spielberg has said "War," with its evil aliens and mass destruction, is the opposite of his masterpiece, "E.T.," it really isn't: He and the writers have transformed Welles' novella into a core story about a broken family that is trying to find home, both literally (as E.T. was) and figuratively (as Elliott was). When the aliens attack the New York area, Ray has his kids on a weekend visitation. They set off for Boston to find the kids' mom (Miranda Otto), and along the way, they rediscover their own sense of family.
Spielberg includes plenty of the awe-striking shots for which he's known a hushed forest, where victim's clothes fall from the sky like eerie snow, a river of corpses but the most awesome thing he has done is to make a sci-fi movie that gives us a reason to worry about the aliens and blown-up buildings. He does this by taking a new approach to the sci-fi extravaganza he makes the special effects part of the location, the world of the movie, rather than setting them off like a fire-. works display. Basically, he applies what he did with the Omaha Beach landing in "Saving Private He engulfs the actors in the chaos of the special effects and then shoots it with an almost documentary, newsreel style, often with handheld cameras in the thick of the action.
Plus, he stays in the action, never cutting to the White House situation room for a Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting on the crisis. He brings the emotional tension to the movie in ways that will be familiar to Spielberg fans: By framing the story around a splintered family of divorce, and by casting an unusually gifted child actor at the center of that family. Cruise's Ray Ferrier is the designated hero of the movie: He is the one who undergoes the hero's transformation during the story, from self-centered jerk to caring father.
